Although a Humber Bicycle is built for Danish weather, winter requires a little extra attention if you want to extend the life of your cargo bike.
1. Bring the battery indoors: Battery cells don’t like extreme cold. When the temperature drops to freezing, the battery loses capacity faster. So always bring the battery indoors in a warm place when you’re not using the bike – and charge it at room temperature. This gives both longer range and a longer lifespan.
You also care for the battery by charging it continuously throughout the winter, even if you are not using the e-bike. We recommend charging the battery at least once a month, but the more times the better. It is not good for the battery cells inside a battery if it is discharged.
2. Wash off the salt: Road salt is a bike's worst enemy. It attacks the chain, sprockets and electrical connections. Make it a habit to rinse your bike with lukewarm water (without high pressure!) if you have been riding on salted roads. Remember to lubricate the chain more often in the winter.
3. Check your tire pressure: In cold weather, tire pressure can drop. Driving with underinflated tires increases rolling resistance, which drains your battery faster. Make sure your tires are fully inflated – this also reduces the risk of punctures in wet conditions.
